I'm New

Welcome to First UMC Elgin!

Welcome to First UMC Elgin. We know that visiting a church for the first time can be scary, but you have already taken a huge step - you're here - so welcome! We would love to see you on Sunday mornings, so we have put together a few frequently asked questions that we will hope you feel more comfortable.

What to Expect?

We recognize that many people who visit a church for the first time do so with a bit of fear, but we hope you will feel genuinely welcomed here. First UMC Elgin celebrates the diversity of the human community and affirms the sacred worth of each person.  We seek to follow the Way of Jesus, extending love to others as we want to be loved.  We welcome into full inclusion in the life and ministries of the church people of all sexual orientation (lesbian, gay, and bisexual) and gender identities (transgender), ages, races and national origins, physical or mental abilities, and economic conditions.

We have answered some of the most common questions we receive, but the best way to get to know First UMC Elgin is to talk with the people. Don't hesitate to strike up a conversation with Pastor Felicia, the greeters, and ushers, or anyone you see in the church building.

What time is Worship?

Worship starts at 9:00 on Sunday morning. Our organist, Dr. Mindy Pugh, begins her prelude at around 8:45, so feel free to come early and sit for a few minutes to listen and clear your mind for worship. Our worship services mix traditional and contemporary styles and are filled with music, prayers, and scripture. Visual and hearing assistance aids are available for those who might need them.

Is there parking?

Free parking is available in the city parking deck across the street. A limited number of handicap spaces are available in front of and next to the church building.

Is the building handicap accessible?

Yes! First UMC Elgin is fully handicap accessible. Ramps are available at the main entrance for those who might need them. The Sanctuary is on the main floor, and the aisles are wheelchair-friendly. An elevator is available in the west wing for access to the lower and second floors. Washrooms on the main and second floors are also wheelchair accessible.

How will I know where to go?

The main entrance to First UMC Elgin is located on Highland Avenue. Please enter through those doors, and our Greeters will welcome you. Ushers will hand you a bulletin and guide you to a seat in our Sanctuary. If you would like to sit in the balcony, please let an Usher know, and they will show you to the staircases or elevator if needed.

What should I wear?

Some people come dressed in their Sunday best. Others dress more casually. Either way, we believe that God cares more about the state of our hearts than the state of our attire, and we encourage you to dress in the way that feels most appropriate to you.
