Reconciling Ministries

First United Methodist Church of Elgin celebrates the diversity of the human community and affirms the sacred worth of each person.  We seek to follow the Way of Jesus, extending love to others, as we would want to be loved.  We welcome into full inclusion in the life and ministries of the church people of all sexual orientation (lesbian, gay, and bisexual) and gender identities (transgender), ages, races and national origins, physical or mental abilities, and economic conditions.  We especially proclaim this statement of welcome to all who have known the pain or exclusion or discrimination in the church.  As a Reconciling Congregation, we believe that we are being reconciled to God and to one another.

The United Methodist Church shuns gay and lesbian people by stating the practice of homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching.  It excludes self-avowed practicing homosexuals from the ordained ministry, closes the doors of United Methodist churches to those who wish to celebrate same-sex weddings and forbids ordained clergy from participating in same-sex marriage ceremonies.  Through these exclusions the church effectively informs many of God's children they are unwanted and unwelcome.

Reconciling Ministries Network is a grassroots movement of United Methodists committed to eliminating exclusive language from the Book of Discipline and celebrating the personhood of all God's children including gay men, lesbian women and those struggling with their own gender identity.  The network seeks to reconcile the church with its declared Christ-like identity as an open, loving body – an identity that has been and remains disingenuous since its founding.

Members of the FUMC Reconciling Ministry team are committed to extending the love of Christ to those who have been left out.  It is our prayer that the heart of everyone in the congregation will acknowledge the pain and suffering we have inflicted on our sisters and brothers and will join in the effort to be redeemed from sins past and present and move toward a glorified future.
